Guilty pleasures
Posted by shelbinator under Cool things, Culture, Random
As my birthday bore down on me like a herd of bison with a bad case of the throw-ups, I read Lori’s take on an “Old Skool” music mix, and that set into motion one of my umpteen million “Hey this shiny object is WAY cooler than my dissertation research” distractions. I decided that I wanted to go into this terribly unceremonious birthday fully stocked with music from those days when my biggest worries involved passing notes to boobless girls and mastering the tuck’n'roll on my new Guess? jeans — or even before that, who was I going to skate with during a Couples Only Skate! $22.77 later on iTunes, my holiday weekend roadtrip was set to these classics that you just have to rush out and download:
- Rio - Duran Duran
- Owner of a Lonely Heart - Yes
- Tainted Love - Soft Cell
- Always Something There to Remind Me - Naked Eyes
- You Spin Me ‘Round (Like a Record) - Dead or Alive
- Pinball Number Count - Pointer Sisters (super old skool! TWELVE!)
- Safety Dance - Men Without Hats
- She Blinded Me with Science - Thomas Dolby
- Relax - Frankie Goes to Hollywood
- Voices Carry - ‘Til Tuesday
- One Thing Leads to Another - The Fixx
- Paranoimia (Featuring Max Headroom) - The Art of Noise
- I Feel for You - Chaka Khan (For the record, my college band used to cover this)
- We Got the Beat - The Go-Go’s (No, I’m not sure why)
- (Keep Feeling) Fascination - The Human League
- In a Big Country - Big Country
- Everybody Wants to Rule the World - Tears for Fears
- The Reflex - Duran Duran
- I Ran (So Far Away) - A Flock of Seagulls
- Let’s Go Crazy - Prince
- Double Dutch Bus - Clueless
- Rapper’s Delight - The Sugarhill Gang
- I Can’t Wait - Nu Shooz (There’s a reason they edit crap down for the radio)

A belated thanks, pal. You hit the nail on the head - but sadly, iTunes only offers the German-language version! So, if you happen to have that recording and want to send an unlicensed MP3 my way, I won’t tell the RIAA. ;-)
