Kids these days: so many toys, I can’t keep up. I’m only 32 and I seriously feel like I might as well get on board the “I have no idea what kids these days are talking about” bandwagon, because it’s just moving so flippin’ fast.

Nonprofits are trying to keep up because they know that if they can crack this online/mobile world the yout’s live in today, they can tap into a massive volunteer movement for social change on a budget that matches their nonprofit thrift, and I’m desperately trying to get into that business. Too bad I have this stupid dissertation thing distracting me all the time. Stupid crack growin’ crap. Bah.

I’m working on a longer piece about some interesting new tools in the netroots world for my farewell post on the YDAtl blog, but I have real, actual work to tend to today. In the meantime, I’ve slapped one of the new toys, a Veeker player, over on the sidebar down there. Veeker allows you to set up a free account, register your mobile phone with them, and send video clips to Veeker which will automatically appear in your Veeker feed and on your little flash player wherever you want to embed it. That first row of the player is stuff I’ve uploaded; below that come your “friends’” posts. (Yes, I spent a good bit of time enabling this Wordpress blog to take posts from my phone, but the video embeds just don’t seem to work.) Them kids they loves to embed some crap on their MySpace, so I have a feeling this is just the kind of garish distraction that will take off there eventually; the question is, if a group like Young Democrats has a bunch of Veeking members sending citizen journalist clips to their embedded players during protests, GOTV campaigns, and elections, will it turn into something useful?

Back to the crackin’.
