Tell me where the bomb is!

From today’s Global Security Newswire, there is apparently some concern over 24’s provocative content.
Stereotypes about Arabs are promoted on shows such as “24,” [Communications Professor Sut] Jhally said. The episode Monday made direct connections between Arabs and nuclear terrorism, and comes amidst fears in Washington that Iran is developing atomic weapons, he said.
What’s more concerning to me is how many people, including a fretful professor at U. Mass, still haven’t figured out that Iran is not an Arab country. No wonder we keep screwing things up over there!
(And seriously, is it just the TV program that’s making direct connections between Arabs and nuclear terrorism? Or is it those pesky Arab terrorists who have tried to acquire nuclear weapons? )

It’s a frequent source of annoyance to Iranians in this country. Historically, Iranians don’t much get along with Arabs. That they’re constantly confused with Arabs by Americans ticks them off. Imagine being German and living in a country where everyone not only thinks you’re French, but gets slightly annoyed with you if you try to explain the difference.
I’m an American born to Iranian parents, and I’ve noticed the confusion for as long as I can remember. It annoys me, but not as an Iranian. It annoys me as an American. The morons who don’t know the difference and don’t want to know the difference between an “Arab,” “Muslim,” “Persian,” “Shia,” or “Sunni” are quite frequently people with very strong opinions about how the U.S. should “act” in the Middle East. Ex. President Bush.
