Anti-war, pro-troop
Posted by shelbinator under Politics
If you missed the debate tonight, here’s Senator Biden explaining what the particularly strident anti-war left can’t seem to wrap their brains around about his vote on the war funding supplemental while they embrace Clinton & Obama for going back on their words and voting against funding for the troops. Integrity and a consistently realistic anti-war record means nothing to some folks. (Nor does the term “flip-flop.”)

I’m becoming increasing sick to death of the fact that almost no one seems to remember what the Congress does and who passes laws! Half of the answers to the dumb as hell questions were folks like Biden who have to educate America on how government works.
But ps: this is why Senators don’t make great candidates, there isn’t time in these debates to explain how a bill in a rethug administration doesn’t look like one now.
As big Paulie whould say, for cripes sakes, this is a complicated issue and can’t be solved by a freak’n show of hands.

Juliana - That’s where I think an evolution of campaign tactics that exploits the “retail politicking” combined with web video and other social media could really help. Most people in this country — even some of us inside baseball types — still aren’t watching the debates, so it’s up to the leading edge of volunteers to collect the footage and craft an articulate and engaging message.
And, to Juliana & Audacity both, that’s also why I liked Biden from the beginning: he did better on MTP explaining unpopular votes than anyone I’d seen before, so I thought if anyone could buck the “don’t run a Senator for President” trend it’d be him. Frankly I think his terribly abbreviated response about voting for the border fence last session was a real dud, not indicative of his skill at all, but probably just because he could see Wolf shoving him along with the game clock. He probably voted for a bill containing funding for a fence because it also came with a dozen other much cooler, more useful things. Ah well.

A few years ago, my Dad made the comment that we would vote for Biden if he ran for President. And my Dad (at the time) was a moderate Republican, having voted for Clinton twice and Bush twice.

I will assume you have seen the Daily Show’s take on the debate…and the good Senator’s sound bite on Don’t Ask Don’t Tell. I know his heart was in the right place…but oh dear.
