These will be trickling out slowly as I hop weak WiFi networks and, eventually, drive home to Atlanta.

Pingback from John King on Joe Biden: the missing moments » shelbinator.com
October 15th, 2007 at 2:11 pm[…] Like an idiot, I accidentally taped over about 30 critical seconds of my conversation with John King in the spin room. Luckily, my live-streaming webcam caught the moment, and while the audio certainly doesn’t live up to miniDV, I supplemented it with subtitles for the hard of hearing. […]

Hi Shelbinator,
Thanks a bunch for uploading this video to YouTube! It was great to see John speaking casually like that to you. So jealous! :) (Although if I had seen him I would have been too freaked out to go up to him, lol)
Hey I noticed there was a gap in your video. Would it be possible to share the entire interview?
Thanks a bunch!

Hi Millie,
Sadly, the missing footage was due to a classic newbie screwup, and it was exactly the footage I wanted most of all: John was talking about Biden having a good night, as many people said that night. I had rewound the tape in the camera to show some of the Biden staffers, and then the Senator started moving again and we rushed over and someone said “Film this if you can” and I just instinctively hit record, taping over part of the King footage. It took me about 20 seconds to figure out what I was doing and hit stop. What you missed was, in general, that he thought Biden did well because this more relaxed question format let him come through as the Democratic counterpart to McCain, i.e., the “straight-talker.” King erroneously suggested that Biden got more time that night, whereas according to the Dodd Clock, he only got about 6:30 Monday whereas he had closer to 8:00 in the first debate, so that sucked. And King wrapped up with a general “I think the Biden campaign can be confident they had a pretty good night — now, whether this turns into any results in the polls, other candidates have more of a structural advantage, in terms of fundraising, but overall Biden did well.” Or something like that.
If you go back to my live-stream post from Monday night, there’s a recorded archive from my webcam, and the John King section starts around 17:00 if you scroll ahead — you might even catch a little bit of a heated rant from King to one of the producers about someone trying to relocate him or I don’t know what, but he seemed annoyed with someone in the control room. The entire interview was caught on webcam but the audio is pretty lousy. I grabbed the missing footage from there and might upload it to YouTube this weekend once I write out subtitles to supplement the audio.

Thanks for the info. Where can I find the link to your live stream post? I’ve heard here and there that King has a temper, so it doesn’t surprise me that he might have been ranting to someone behind the scenes. He semmed personable enough, though, when speaking with you - he was nice about the whole thing. I’m sure he must have been pretty busy, but the fact that he took a few moments to speak with you was pretty cool. Thanks again.
