Bill Richardson brings Mi Familia to Georgia
Posted by shelbinator under Local News, Politics, Video
Bill Richardson spent Friday, October 5, in Atlanta, GA, where he chartered a Spanish-named campaign infrastructure in a state with its fair share of anti-immigrant sentiments; enjoyed a lonely lunch at the Varsity with a nutritious “Yellow Dog;” and, in a bit of a switch, helped local Democrats raise a little money for their efforts here at home.
After meeting with the Georgia Legislative Black Caucus and stopping into CNN for some multilingual interviews, he visited with the Georgia Tech Young Democrats and chartered the Georgia chapters of Mi Familia con Bill Richardson, the campaign’s grassroots mobilization effort. When asked about the potential downside to direct ethnic branding of their campaign infrastructure, a campaign staffer said that it had been considered and dismissed, as any potential votes lost to objections over ethnicity were probably unattainable in the first place.
There was a quick lunch break at the Varsity — a local must-try attraction in the fast food market — where the disappointingly low turnout highlighted the downside to being a lonely “second tier” candidate, regardless of your resume. A highbrow fundraiser followed at the Globe, and finally the governor addressed — for free, in terms of his take from the event — friends of the Georgia Association of Democratic County Chairs (GADCC) and the Young Democrats of Georgia at the IBEW auditorium.

I really like Richardson. If I were going to support someone right now, it’d probably be him. It makes me sad that lower-tier candidates (like Richardson and your boy Biden) are out before the damn thing even starts.
He’s talking like someone who wants to snag a SoS appointment.
Nice work snagging the interview with him.

I am a proud New Mexican (but my brother lives in Alpharetta) and I would like to lend a personal testimony to Bill Richardson’s efforts in Georgia. New Mexico was one of the poorest states in the nation, with terrible numbers in jobs, wages, poverty, unemployment, growth, and education. Bill Richardson has been a real boon to our state, creating over 80,000 jobs (in a state that just hit 2 million people, that is huge) Most of the jobs were lured here with tax incentives to companies willing to pay above the prevailing wage, and guarantee New Mexican workers benefits, as well as use clean energy or produce it. He has increased teachers’ salaries while cutting top heavy administrative costs, brought renewable energy (solar, wind, biomass) plants to our state, and even a commuter rail to reduce our heavily congested Rio Grande corridor. Governor Richardson combines the fiscal responsibility that we used to associate with conservative republicans with progressive sensibilities that show innovative thinking for a new millenium, and compassion for his fellow man.
Combine these incredible domestic achievements with the best diplomatic skills in our nation, and an unmatchable political resume, Bill Richardson is the best candidate for President of the United States of either party. I am proud to support my governor. Go Bill!

Thanks, friends. Glad I still have a local audience; HuffPo’s Off the Bus page still has an Obama story from Sunday as the top-center headline (with picture), and no Tuesdsay story under the Campaign Coverage header while this sits in the queue. Glad I managed to irritate my girlfriend by taking work on vacation with me to get this done ASAP. It’s seriously hard to rise above the fold over there without Obama in the headline.
