Making online videos is fun. Making online videos with good music in ‘em is more fun. Of course, if you use something already in the mainstream media and controlled by the good ol’ lawyers at RIAA, you could wind up with your video ganked, at best, and notice of legal action at worst. Good thing there are plenty of content creators — musicians, videographers, photographers — who subscribe to the Creative Commons model. They’re not out to establish a monopoly, they just want a little credit for their talent. It’s a good way to get your portfolio distributed, and maybe it’ll lead to someone with money and a project in mind getting in touch with you for your mad skillz.
I only found out about the music clearinghouse CCmixter a couple months ago, and while it’s a little heavy on the electronica and hip-hop, it’s a good place to check for a potential video soundtrack. Ever since I heard this particular track I’ve wanted to create a video just for the purpose of setting it to that music. And during NaVloPoMo, I heard about Lost in Light, a good place to find CC B-roll footage if you’re looking for something aged and obscure.
And now I see (rather late in the game) that Creative Commons is having a fundraiser. I have no idea what they need the money for; I don’t really care. I’m just pretty sure it’s a good thing, and it’s another good way to stick it to the man. ‘Cause I’m so about sticking it to the man. I’m not the man.

If you’re into the creative commons concept, then you should check out some of Lawrence Lessig’s essays. Sure, they’re legal essays, but they are really entertaining. He makes some pretty sound arguments about the absurdity of copyright law and it’s essentially interminable lifespan.
